Doesn't install on 19.10: nvidia-dkms-430 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 6

Asked by Andy Jenkins

The 418 driver was working for me previously but then an 'apt upgrade' failed.

The package remained unconfigured and trying 'dpkg --configure nvidia-dkms-430' or trying to reinstall failed with the following:

Error! Application of patch do-not-call-pci_save_state.patch failed.
Check /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/430.64/build/ for more information.

No information seemed to be present in the folder mentioned.

Is this a bug or have I done something wrong?

Andy Jenkins; Hello

"Is this a bug or have I done something wrong?" remains to be seen :)

Show us:
dpkg -l | grep linux-
dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

-we see what is to be done-

I am a bit astonished to see a message mentioning nvidia/430.64 if the version in the Ubuntu repository is 430.50

Please also provide the output that you receive for the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
apt-cache policy nvidia-dkms-430
ls -l /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/430.*/build/

Thank you both for the swift replies.
Manfred's answer flipped a switch in my brain - it turns out I was using the graphics-drivers PPA and had forgotten about it. I have since purged and reinstalled the package from the repo and it works now.

Apologies.

Andy, can you provide me with information on how you installed the package from the repo? I'm also in your situation but I'm not sure exactly what that means.

Ahhh, sorry to bother. I believe I figured it out - it's just a matter of removing the PPA from my sources and using the "Canonical Partners" option. I interpreted your message to mean you did a git pull to manually build / install.

Hi Lauren, yes that's exactly what I did. I removed the PPA from my sources, then ran

apt purge nvidia*
apt update
apt install nvidia-driver-430
