NVIDIA Quadro and proprietary drivers. Impossible to set Monitor Vertical Refresh to 60 in analog mode.
I have installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a newly assembled PC with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 210S and a Samsung 203B. The monitor has a native resolution of 1400x1050 and a recommended refresh rate of 60. I have tried several things, including:
installed nvidia-glx-new using Synaptic
sudo nvidia-setting
-- set the refresh rate from auto to 60, clicked apply, and saved to xorg.config
But when I do System>
(I prefer to use analog because the digital mode seems a bit flaky. I have had several instances where the monitor never recognizes the digital signal during or after boot. The screen remains black with the searching for signal box and I never see even the BIOS messages.)
My xorg.conf follows. The Horizontal and vertical refresh rates in the monitor section match my 203B specs.

I followed your instructions, but replaced the 1600x1200 in the Modes line with 1400x1050. But the choices for refresh rate continue to be 50,51,56, and 57. The new Xorg.0.log follows:

This is very strange indeed. EDID works flawlessy, the driver detects quite a lot of usable mode, chooses as default the 1400x1050@60 Hz and then you don't get it through xrandr!?!?!?
I can only suggests two things:
1) Check with this command:
xrandr -q
what modes are listed. You can select one with the command:
xrandr -s mode
where mode is an integer from the list given by xrandr -q (first column)
If this works than you found a bug in the Gnome applet, if it doesn't work you found a bug in xrandr (either way your behaviour can only be explained by a bug).
2) Check through your monitor what is the actual frequency the monitor is detecting (not very reliable but at least it should give us an idea).

Also an additional little idea to check your refresh rate. If you can set your vsync on, than by running any 3d application which also displays frame rate information you can check what is your vertical refresh rate.
Only caveat, since you have no dri it would have to be a pretty simple application (you must be capped by the refresh rate not by the rendering).

I thought about something else which may also help us to understand if it is really an xrandr problem, or a driver problem (and perhaps if this latter is true also hopefully to solve it).
Can you revert to the open source driver, and see if it exibihit the same behaviour? Your chipset (C 51) should be supported by these drivers.

A bit more history that resulted in my installing the nvidia-glx-new driver: I first installed Fedora Core 6 on this PC and it recognized both the graphics card and monitor as generic. The maximum resolution choice was 1280x1024. This worked fine, except the native resolution of my monitor is 1400x1050.
I then installed Kubunto, and the maximum resolution choice with the native drivers was 1024x756. This also worked OK. I tried installing the nvidia-glx driver. This resulted in a black screen during boot. In retrospect, I think this was due to my flaky hardware in digital mode. The screen remains black during boot and sometimes the searching for signal box is displayed on the screen. I can not reproduce this problem at will, but it recovers (usually) by powering the monitor off and on or by powering the system unit off and on. It has not recovered by doing a hardware reset although I have only tried this about 4 times. The failure occurs during a cold boot about 10-20% of the time. It has never happened after a software restart. I think this is a separate issue and intend to swap out the digital cable and/or monitor.
I then installed Ubunto, and the maximum resolution choice using the native drivers was again 1024x756. I then installed the nvidia-glx-new driver bringing me to this point.
Here is some additional info. In digital mode before login, my monitor reports it is running at:
63.3kHz 60Hz PP
1400x1050
After login, it reports:
65.3kHz 60Hz PP
1400x1050
In analog mode before login, the monitor reports:
81.3kHz 75Hz PP
After login:
64.7kHz 60Hz PP
A curiosity, no resolution is reported in analog mode. Before login the screen is shifted right about 200 pixels and about of the hide-all-windows icon is missing. After login, none of the hide-all-windows icon is visible. The screen shift to the right problem is gone, but I think I fixed this a while back by shifting the screen left manually.
The results of the xrandr -q command are shown below. The results are the same in both digital and analog mode. The 50 55 56 *57 refresh values disagree with my early notes that say my choices were 50 51 56 57 in the System>

I would still check with the open source driver. You shouldn't need to install anything, just change the "nvidia" in "nv"in the driver section.

OK, seems like there is some improvement needed in the NVIDIA proprietary drivers then. You may want to report this to NVIDIA?
The analog display shift can be solved by either using your OSD or by fine tuning with xvidtune.
In the latter case you may want to save your modeline for later permanent incorporation in xorg.conf (use xvidtune -show and paste the given modeline to your monitor section).
