Hi Kavitha

I don't think there is a formula that will do that in a text document table.

If you just want line numbers there is Tools > Line Numbering.

Hi Kavitha,

On the format menu you can select the bullets and numbering option. Set the type of numbering you want and then when you start a new line in the table it will start with the sequential number.

@Paul
Have you tried that? It doesn't work for me.

@Tony,

Perhaps I misunderstood the question?

What I did was insert a table in the document, then I put the cursor in the first cell of the table...then I went to the Format menu, selected the 'Bullets and Numbering' option and then chose the format that I wanted. Then I wrote a sentence, and clicked the enter button to go to the next line, and a number 2 appeared at the beginning of the line.

Is this what you mean?

Thanks
Paul

@ Paul

What I believe kavitha wants is some formula that automatically puts a number in the first cell of a row, then kavitha puts data in the following cells, then when a new row is created the first cell has a number which is the number from the previous row + 1. And so on.

If I do what you say, I do not go to a new row when I press enter. I just get a new line of text with the next number, but in the *same* cell.
