When do I have to updates for Openoffice package

Asked by gopal

I know that the Openoffice package (I am using the current 2.4 version) has an update 3.0.
How I could use this update?
Can I run the SYSTEM-->ADMINISTRATION-->UPDATE MANAGER to find and install the updates for openoffice package?
Thank you
Gopalakrishnan

Hello Gopal:

since OO3 is in beta development stage still, It will probably not be included in the repos of intrepid and you have to wait until the next version of ubuntu is released (ubuntu has decided not to include beta versions of major packages in its releases because ff3 was released in the beta stage in hardy and it had some unresolved problems still..

btw you can test OO3 in ubuntu

Refer

Actually, the new version was just released today. I don't know how long it will take to make it to the repos. If you can't wait you can install it easily enough. Go to the openoffice.org website and download the .deb option. On your desktop right click it and choose "extract here". Open a terminal (apps - accessories) and cd to the desktop

cd Desktop

Then cd to the open office directory and then the "debs" directory. From there run

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

That should install all parts. You might want to uninstall the old version first.

sudo apt-get --purge remove openoffice.org-core

There is also a .deb in a "desktop integradtion" folder that will add the menu item.
