Why isn't Ubuntu 8.10's Openoffice 2.x being officially upgraded to 3.x?

Asked by Diabolus

Hi guys,
a very basic & silly question, the summary says it all.

I understand that Ubuntu 8.10 came out when OO3.x was still pretty unstable. That's fine.
But now, after some two months since the official release of OO3.x, I simply can't understand why the good old OO2.x hasn't been officially updated yet!

Anyone knows if we will be able to enjoy OO3.x before the release of 9.04?

In question #56110 "OpenOffice 3.0 on Ubuntu - can do?", Savvas Radevic replied on 2009-01-02:

"You could use this package archive:
 https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive

You have to add in in the Third-party software at System > Administration > Software Sources.
It doesn't mean necessarily that it will work on Ubuntu, but it will definitely contain updates that will help out :)"

Did anyone try this solution? Does it work on Ubuntu 8.10? Does it upgrade OO2.x to OO3.x, or does it install OO3.x beside OO2.x?

Thanks in advance and best wishes from Italy for a Happy & Prosperous New Year!

I have ubuntu 8.04.1, version 2.26.24-23
I also wanted Open Office 3.
Thanks to RebelZero.com at WEB Page http://www.rebelzero.com/ubuntu/installing-ooo-300-onto-hardy-heron/27 i had no problem installing it.
Visit that site for GREAT ADVICE.
Here are my Notes on how i used that information, I'v changed some to read like install procedures, ANY USE YOU MAKE OF THEM IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. There is NO Guarrantee they will work!
I visited WEB site http://www.openoffice.org/ and went to the download section; select the Linux DEB download for your language...........
I selected American English'/'Linux DEB'. I downloade “ Ooo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz “ to My Desktop.
After the download has finished, open a 'terminal',
use.. (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)...
and go to the directory where you've saved OpenOffice 3.0... /home/jack/Desktop/
You may need to change the “Downloaded File name” and “user name” etc. to match your own settings.
use.. (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)...
To uncompress the archive.. using the 'tar' command.......
use.. (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)... jack@jacks-desktop:~$
use the edit button on this window to paste the command.....
cd /home/jack/Desktop/ now you have a line...............
jack@jacks-desktop:~$ cd /home/donal/Desktop/
NEXT press the 'Enter' button
you now have jack@jacks-desktop:~/Desktop$
Type and enter the following command......
 “ tar xvfz OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz “
.. and go to the directory that contains all the .deb packages...using the 'cd' command.....
  “ cd OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/ “
Inside will be all of the DEBs that you’ll need to install OO.o 3.0.0.
You must remove OpenOffice2 NOW.
To do this, type ” sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-core “
Next, to install Open-Office 3, tpye and Enter the following command...
“ sudo dpkg -i -R . “.
Last command is to change some Folders and Files,
Check now to see where you have OpenOffice on your system.
There should be a file structure like this... “ /usr/lib/openoffice/program “
If there is, then from Terminal, type and Enter this command...
“ sudo mv /usr/lib/openoffice/program -t /opt/openoffice.org3/program “
GOOD LUCK,
Jack

Simple answer is no, thats not the way Ubuntu works. You have to do a manual install if you want it.
