pidgin won't let me sign in to msn im

my pidgin instant messenger won't let me sign in .Keeps giving me this message. Our protocol is not supported by the server. I haven't had any problems getting on up until last night getting on msn IM. what do i need to do to fix this? and please put your anser in layman terms that anyone could follow. thank-you!

This is a new pidgin problem, and it seems to have been caused by MSN changing their protocol on or around 8 dec 2009.
http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/10933 explains what happened.
http://www.pidgin.im/ (pidgin homepage) has a solution to get a newer version of Pidgin even if you have a somewhat older version of Ubuntu (as I do).
Though I just did it and haven't received any updates in my Update Manager, so I'm not sure if I just need to wait a bit or if I blew it : )

I do not see any other similar pidgin questions about this new MSN-protocol pidgin problem as of 8 dec 2009. However this has happened with pidgin before, Yahoo or MSN changing their protocol and people needing to upgrade their pidgin.
