Search for codecs

Asked by Rob Beard

I wouldn't say this is a bug as such, more of a possible feature that might make life easier for less experienced users, please also bear in mind I've not used pitivi before although it's a great addition.

Now I have a HD camcorder which saves in h264 format with AAC audio. I realise that due to licence restrictions these codecs can't be bundled in with the operating system. The files are saved as Quicktime MOV files.

I tried importing one of these files to test if it would work but it displayed an error to say it couldn't find a codec. It didn't however tell me what codecs were required. Trying to open the file in Movie Player did at least suggest that codecs were required (although it was unable to install them, possibly because I hadn't enabled the multiverse repositories.

After installing ubuntu-restricted-extras the videos now import fine. I just wondered if it might be possible to add a prompt for searching for missing codecs in pitivi as it does in Movie Player?

Ta,

Rob
