Upgraded, now only pointer and blank screen appear on boot-up.

I have a DELL laptop, and after I upgraded to 12.4, when I boot the system, only the pointer shows against a blank screen.

I tried "control-alt-F1" and was able to log in, but don't know anything about using the command prompt.

Ubuntu is installed along side Windows, so I have an operating computer, but really prefer Ubuntu.

There is only one document I really want, on the desktop, that I forgot to put on external hard drive.

Suggestions? Thanks.

N5010 laptop. GPU? CPU is - intel core i5 M480

I think I would use the liveCD to boot and then mount the har-drive and get the data you need. After that, consider trying 12.04 from the live CD to make certain everything works, then do a clean install.

Oh, from the commandline you could do cp [your filename with full path] [where you want it to go with a filename]

When you see the mouse pointer and a blank screen, do you have the menu bar at top of screen? It might have disappeared off screen too far.

When I upgraded to 12.04 it booted into a Laptop desktop (even though I have a PC) and the menu bar was almost off the top of screen but I could locate the shutdown menu by moving mouse well over to top right and clicking it even though the top right menu was not showing.
I selected to shutdown and then choose restart.

I was able to get into ubuntu proper by then choosing an older kernel at the grub menu.

The default kernel instaleld with 12.04 was 3.2.0-24, and for me that combination wasn't working right. An older kernel, in my case 3.0.0.17 loaded fine and I got the missing login options again.

I uninstalled kernel 3.2.0-24 once I was into kernel 3.0.0.17 as it looked like kernel 3.2.0-24 didn't suit my machine.
However I now find kernel 3.0.0.17 can also loose the login options on a fresh boot, but so far a restart gets back the login options on ubuntu desktop, so 12.04 may have other issues for me.

My system under Ubuntu 11.10 had been working fine but I upgraded to 12.04 when the automatic notification of 12.04 availability popped up yesterday. I should have waited I think.

I see other issues are appearing for 12.04, including a "music-store-lens bug", which I had yesterday just after an update came though on 12.04 for a lens update. then I had an error report generated every 30 seconds saying Ubuntu had a problem and do I want to report it ..I had the issue untill I reverted the kernel back to 3.0.017 from 3.2.0-24.

Can you help with this problem?
