Rhythmbox provides no method of creating mp3 file

Asked by Jiggy62

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The only file formats available that I've found in preferences to rip CD audio to is FLAC, OGG, WAV and Speex none of which are supported by any normal music players. I clicked the edit button and found a nice looking menu that mentions mp3 but gives me no way to apply it to the file output. I'd like to know if I missed something. Or if there is a fix on the way to create mp3 files.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Have you already installed ubuntu-restricted-extras? This package allows you to select MP3 as a audio output format for ripping your cd.

Please tell us if ubuntu-restricted-extras solved your problem. Thank you.

No I haven't installed that before.
I see it's available in Add/Remove channels, have installed it and it's working nicely.
Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

take a look at this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

should be a hint to the solution.
but if u are impatient u can also just go and do:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

inside a terminal (Alt+F2 : gnome-terminal).

after that restart rhythmbox, and u might have the option.
