Brother scanner not working

I have a Brother MFC-215C multi-function working fine with Ubuntu 8.10, but only as a printer, and I can't access a DRAFT function. I'm also unable to access the scanner function. I've downloaded the relevant Brother drivers e.g. scanner-key and brscan, but when I try to access the 215C via XSane in Applications, no connection is made. Can anyone help with this? Would be much appreciated ...
