corrupted secvpn during upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10

Asked by Hologram

System: Linux viharah 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 21:45:15 GMT 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux
OS: Upgrade from (K)Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (7.04) to (K)Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10)

The upgrade process appeared to hang when installing secvpn (v2.21). This effectively "broke" my upgrade, and possibly left my system in an unbootable state. I Googled for similar issues during a Kubuntu upgrade and found a few hints. I dropped into a bash shell and did "sudo dpkg --configure -a", and the upgrade process finished, giving me a bootable system. But installing patches using adept still seems flaky, as I get "Unable to configure..." errors. Now, when running "sudo dpkg --configure -a" I get this error:

root@viharah:~# dpkg --configure -a
Setting up secvpn (2.21) ...
Starting Monitor Daemon for Secure Virtual Private Network: cp: cannot stat `/etc/inittab': No such file or directory
invoke-rc.d: initscript secvpnmon, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing secvpn (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 secvpn

I'd say that secvpn either needs to be cleaned up or removed from the installation package.

Try removing the package and re-installing.

sudo apt-get remove secvpn

And then,

sudo apt-get install -f secvpn

(But first try forcing the install using "sudo apt-get install -f")

If you are sure its a bug with this package, do file it in the bug section of Ubuntu here at Launchpad.

Can you help with this problem?
