bought computer from a student who hasn't given me the password, is there anyway i can get it?

I bought a Ubuntu from one of my student who hasnt yet given me the password and I'm beginning to think he may have stolen it. But Is there anyway to get the password.

Ubuntu is a free operating system. You can download the installation from ubuntu.com and burn to a cd-rom or a usb stick. During the installation you will set your own password and have a clean system without any previous data on it.

Also, if it is stolen the right thing to do would be to contact the police and try to find the original owner and get your money back.
