Which one are you having trouble with, the printer or scanner?

I am having trouble with the scanner. The computer does not seem to
recognize the scanner.

1. Open "gksudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules" file.

2.Add the following two lines to the end of the device list. (Before the line "# The following rule will disable ..."):

# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

3. Restart the OS.

Hi Edwin,
I'm having the exact same problem, my Brother printer works fine but I cannot get the scanner to work at all.
Did you ever solve it?
Unfortunately wojox solution didn't work for me.
Best,
Pat.

Old thread, but was having same problem and stumbled onto a solution. Tried several things listed here and elsewhere without success. Brother MFC7460DN was printing but would not scan (scanning applications could never find it). Running Ubuntu 12.04 in 32 bit.

1. Downloaded Scanner Driver and Scan Key Tool from:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_scn.html
Check your printer model, operating system (32 or 64 bit) to decide which driver (brscan, 2, 3 or 4) and file format (RPM or Debian) to download.

2. The downloaded files appear in the Downloads browser window. For example, the driver and key tool files for MFC7460DN, 32 bit, Debian (not rpm) were:
brscan4-0.4.1-3.i386.deb
brscan-skey-0.2.4-0.i386.deb

3. From the Downloads browser window, right click on the scanner driver file to Open, which launches Ubuntu Software Center and shows the Brother Scanner Driver. Click Install. Repeat for the scan key tool file.

I tested this with both XSane and gscan2pdf and both applications were able to find the device and scan successfully. Hope this is helpful.

Can you help with this problem?
