I am generally curious about snort I have installed it but want to know how to configure it and use it

I know it has to be used in terminal

But how does it work and how is it used?

I strongly suggest that you read the manual that is on this page, and generally look over the documentation. This will explain what the application does, how it works, and the best setup for your requirements.

I tried To enable Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) mode
via terminal
./snort -dev -l ./log -h 192.168.1.0/24 -c snort.conf
but it didnt work
