I am wondering how it may be possible to open MS Outook *.msg files in Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.

Thanks in advance

Thanks, but unfortunately it does not work for me. I have installed the software and entered command, but the software returns a lot of error notifications and did not create mime fail.

I found the solution.
1) download file http://ruby-msg.googlecode.com/files/ruby-msg-1.5.0.gem
2) type into terminal "sudo gem install --local path_to_gem/filename.gem" without quotes
may be you need to install "ruby" and "rubygems" previously.
3) type into terminal "sudo gem install rubygems-update" without quotes
4) right-mouse click on the *.msg you like to convert and select "open with other applicatios", then "use a custom command" and type "/home/USER_NAME/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin/mapitool -i" without quotes into command line
5) click "open" after that a *.eml will be created into directory of the *.msg. You can open the *.eml with Thunderbird etc.

It would be grate if somebody create script or package and put is on PPA or even to official repository.

I searched the solution for 3 years. MSGConvert does not work for me. The solution was found here http://code.google.com/p/ruby-msg/

Good luck for everyone!

For non command liners
Save .msg file and/or
Open with open/libre office calc as a web page query.
save as html document
view in firefox
This leaves some crud at the top
cut and paste into office document to clean up and format as required.
