New to the application

I looked on the internet and this was mentioned as a possible way to recover some data from a hard drive that is now reading uninitialized/. Is this correct?
Itried to initialize through windows but would not work.
Can anyone help me with this issue.
It is my wifes pictures of the kids etc.
TOLD HER TO BACK THEM UP.
