Thunderbird on Lucid Beta: Problems with window redraws, hints, and menus

Asked by Randall Ross

Hi,

Recently I upgraded to the latest Thunderbird (3.0.3) for Lucid Lynx (Beta, all updates to 04/14/2010.)

I'm seeing some problems with windows redrawing (they often don't). I'm also not seeing any "hints", the text that should appear when hovering over messages. Additionally, menus don't fill properly when pulled down, just a blank square where menu items should be.

Has anyone else seen this? Any suggested workarounds?

Thanks in advance,
Randall

Log a bug

Lucid is still in Beta and still has lots of issues and problems are to be expected.

@actionparsnip: I certainly will log a bug, and yes I am fully aware that Lucid is in beta and I expect many problems, and I even welcome them. Having said that, your answer was unhelpful. Appreciate your effort to typewhat you did but frankly you have added no useful information. I often check Answers first since developers/power users are known to respond here with suggested workarounds or hints, and that makes for more robust bug reporting.

I have further info. on the problem:

This only happens when Visual Effects are turned on and set to "Normal" or "Extra" (i.e. there seems to be a clash between Compiz and Thunderbird windowing). To date Thunderbird is the only app that I've seen this behaviour. (and Firefox is working fine.) Mysterious.

Have you tried addingthe mozilla PPA? The newer build may help.

I'm having a similar issue to that described above with the official release of Lucid with TB. At first I thought it might be an issue caused by the upgrade but I have since done a new install (kept /home folder) and still had the same issue.

I renamed local TB profile and it still didn't help. Only disabling the Desktop Effects (setting to none) has let me use Thunderbird correctly.

The laptop is question is a HP nc4010 with a Radeon graphics card:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon IGP 330M/340M/350M

Any suggestions greatly received as Gnome-Do doesn't look very nice without compositing enabled :-)

Can you help with this problem?
