backup/recover tomboy data files

I recently lost a hard drive. I went looking for the tomboy data files ( ../.local/shared/tomboy/*.note) on the external HD I use for backup and did not find the files I expected in any of my quarterly backups. I hand been backing up my documents with a "cp -R {home/user}/*.* {external HD folder}". I now presume the files were not copied because they are under a hidden directory. Is this true? I found no reference to hidden directories in man or info. I can write a script to copy the files but is there anything else I should be thinking about to safeguard these files? Can I import backup file merging it into a new database that already has entries?

partly solved. What about merging files. Is that a "no"?

When you reinstall you can simply overwrite the files with the backedup ones. Not sure about merging though, if you look at the structure in the files, it may be a case of copying text if they are stored as simple text. Backup any files you modify before playing and you may find how to merge 2 lots of tomboys

Note files seem to be html but I don't know enough about html to be sure I can modify them. I'll give it a try when I get a round tuit. I wish I could specify where I want the note files kept. I'm not happy with having them under a hidden directory. They are important to me and I want to keep track of them without having to remember to go to .local too.
