Had you tried playing the movies with VLC?

sudo apt-get install vlc

HTH.

Yes I have tried this program. I used it for a long time in Windows and was happy to see in Ubuntu. The display is very dark, I can make out what's happening. A video clip from the Internet on a news story is ok.
It is unusual for me to have this problem in Ubuntu. It always finds the right drivers, but not this time.
Thanks
George

Can you also give the output of:

lsb_release -a

Thanks
