how to Uninstall Totem

Asked by Flope

hi,
probably I am asking a stupid question.
I am using ubuntu 6.10 64-bit and I would like to uninstall Totem movie player. When I mark in the synaptic package manager to uninstall totem it also wants to remove other applications that seems to me essentials like:

for exemple, when I marked to uninstall totem-mozilla it also marks to be removed ubuntu-desktop. What does it mean? It is going to remove the desktop?

or when I mark libtotem-plparser1 it also marks gedit, rythmbox, gnome applets,.....
 How to remove only totem?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Sorry for being so newbie!!

The ubuntu-desktop is a package needed to indicate that all packages of the Ubuntu Desktop are installed on your system. As the totem media player belongs to this group of core desktops components, uninstalling totem will also uninstall ubuntu-desktop.

I am merely guessing now, but do you want to use a different media player but totem for playing your files per default? This can be achieved by selecting a media file from nautilus, selecting it's property and then the 'Open With' tab. This can also be done from the command line with gconftool-2, but it's a rather awkward process if you're unfamiliar with the command line.

Thank you for your reply!!!
Ok. My intention is to use VLC player as default and within firefox.
If I want to uninstall firefox pluggin (even if I keep totem) I have to uninstall ubuntu-desktop. Can I do it without problems? I mean will ubuntu OS working properly without ubuntu-desktop?

libtotem-plparser1 is a library to parse playlists. If I try to uninstall it is uninstalling deskbar-applet, gedit, genome-applets, rhythmbox, python-gnome2-desktop, serpentine.... Does it mean that these programs needs this library to work properly? Could I unmark these programs and use them without the library?

You may run into troubles when upgrading if ubuntu-desktop is uninstalled. I would not uninstall libtotem-plparser1. While still not a clean solution, moving the *totem* links from /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ might provide a short term solution. A better way would be to disable the totem plugin in Firefox, but I don't know how (yet).

I'm facing the same issue. How was Flope's request solved?

I'd like to use mplayer for web media rather than Totem. An example sites where mplayer works and totem doesn't is cnn.com.

Mike, take a look at my comment from 2007-02-24:

Thanks for the message.
I agree that it's probably not the cleanest solution, but it does work well. Now I've got web video again.
