Plug your camera into the USB (or FireWire) port using the cable that came with your digital camera. Turn the camera on. The Camera Import tool will automatically launch - click the Import Photos button.

The default location to save your photos will likely be the home folder. In all likelihood, you’ll want to change this. To do so, select the Destination: drop down list..

And choose Other… from the menu.

Use the Places shortcuts to navigate to the folder you want to save your pictures in. I have a My Pictures folder in my home folder that I use for just this occasion. When you’ve selected a folder to save your photos in, click the Open button.

If you want to delete the pictures from your camera after they’ve downloaded to your computer, make sure to place a check in the box labeled Delete imported images from the camera.

Sit back and watch as the pictures are moved from your camera to your computer.

Once the import has completed, the Ubuntu Picture Viewer will automatically open. You can use it to view all of the pictures you just moved from your camera to your PC, or just close it down.

If you navigate to the folder where you store the pictures from your digital camera (again, in my case this is the My Pictures folder) - you’ll notice a new folder. That’s the one that contains all of the pictures you just moved from your camera to your computer.

"Most USB digital cameras will be automatically detected by Ubuntu. Simply plug in and switch on your USB digital camera, Ubuntu will then ask you if you would like to import the photos from your camera. Click on Import, Ubuntu will then show you a preview of your photos. Choose a location to save your photos to, then click on Import, Ubuntu will then save your photos to your hard drive."

gThumb Image Viewer

gThumb is an advanced image viewer and browser. It has many useful features, such as filesystem browsing, slide show, image catalogs, web album creation, camera import, image CD burning, batch file operations and quick image editing features like transformation and color manipulation.

gThumb is included in Ubuntu by default. To start it, choose Applications->Graphics->gThumb Image Viewer .

gThumb's excellent help files are accessible from Help->Contents.

You can use Evolution , to mail them .
And you can open the picture with 'eog' and print it .

Configure Evolution for gmail :

The first step is to log in to your GMail account and to click on Settings and click on the Forwarding and POP tab. Under POP Download select Enable POP for all mail and click Save Changes.

Start Evolution

If you have not used Evolution before, or haven’t set up an account the New Account Wizard will launch. Click Forward.

Type in your Full Name and your Gmail Email Address and click Forawrd.

Select SMTP as the Server Type. The Server is smtp.gmail.com. Encryption is TLS, Authentication is Plain and fill in your full Gmail Email Address. Click Forward.

Give your account a name, it does not have to be anything Logical. Click Forward.

Select the current Time Zone and click Forward.

Click Apply.

If the New Account Wizard doesn’t launch, then in Evolution go to Edit – Preferences and click on Mail Accounts. Edit the info so that it matches the information above and you will be able to send and receive GMail.
