ubuntu wont play dvds

Asked by Vince Teeter

When I install Ubuntu 9.10 and try to play a commercial DVD image, the Movie Player application drills down into the VIDEO_TS directory and then says it needs a plug in to play the DVD. I is unable to find the plugin so it cannot play commercial DVD's. Is there a solution ?

I installed all this libdvdcss stuff but Ubuntu still does not seem to understand commercial the DVD format. When I click on the movie directory, it drills down to the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories and if I try to select the VIDEO_TS directory, it drills down to the .VOB and other files then says I need a plugin. I click on OK and it comes back with some blinky message about MPEG-2 plugin not found.

DVD players for Windows (XP, Vista, and Win7) such as VLC Media Player have no problem playing these DVD files.

Encryption is not the issue. Many commercial DVD's are not Encrypted, nor are DVD's produced by home DVD recorders.

I need the equivalent of VLC Media Player for Ubuntu.

You can install VLC media Player in Ubuntu : go to the Ubuntu Software Center (Ubuntu 9.10) or to the "Add/Remove..." program (older Ubuntu versions) and search for VLC (after enabling all available softwares in the selection list).

Nice. Wish something like VLC was part of the Ubuntu install.
I also like the fact that this version did not try to install all the adware that the Windows version does.

Thanks,
