turn off sub-titles

while viewing movies there are always sub-titles - even in the english speaking ones. is there a way to turn them off?

If the subtitles are embedded to the movie (burn to the movie) then you cannot do anything. But if are external file (such as .srt ) then you can ignore the subtitles.

What player you use?

Try the smplayer (is almost the same as VLC). Locate the package in Ubuntu Software Center and install it.
Then you can change the settings for subtitles by right clicking in smplayer when movie plays.
