Unexisting country in the updates...

Asked by alfar

Tzdata contains updates related to a break-away region of Moldova, the self-proclaimed "pridnestrovian moldavian republic" whose existence has not been recognized by any world state - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transnistria

In my opinion this is not a proper practice (especially given the fact that updates related to this "pridnestrovian..." have a long history already in most of the ubuntu versions.

I would suggest that this "state" (created and ran by a criminal clan, responsible for many war crimes) is excluded from the updates since the presence of updates related to this unrecognized "country" is not politically correct, offending to the people of Moldova including those families who lost their dear ones during the 1992 war, and makes Canonical Ltd. look ridiculous and unaware of the realities out-there.

Hopefully this issue gets the deserved attention from the Canonical Ltd. and the Ubuntu community. thank you in advance.

best regards.

So, with your opinion the US shouldn't have more update for Hiroshima, the Italy shouldn't have more update for Berlusconi (yes, I'm italian) and so on. I think that it's very difficult to see your request carried.

Enrico, what are you talking about? what has Italy got to do about "update for Berlusconi"?

I am not talking about stopping talking about unpleasant things from present or history (as I assume that's what you meant with your Italy vs Berlusconi remark)...

I am merely pointing to the fact that the code of tzdata contains information regarding a fake country, fact which doesn't seem correct:

 tzdata (2011n-1) unstable; urgency=critical
  * New upstream veersion, fixing DST for:
    - Cuba.
    - Fidji.
    - Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
  * Set urgency to high as some of the above changes are already
    effective.
etc.

Again I am talking here about an illegal political entity, unrecognized, not a member of the UN (try and search "Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic" on Google Maps for example), a political entity that emerged out of a bloody conflict, the conflict being currently still unresolved.

So, if a bug can be defined as "an error, flaw, mistake, failure, or fault" than consider this a bug since, again it appears that tzdata contains erroneous information.

P.S.: Sam, thanks for the links but this has nothing to do with diversity. Otherwise we risk to follow Enrico "eNry" Carafa logic, and risking to include time zone information about the Nazi Third Reich and so forth.
