two operating systems on startup

Asked by James Davis

On startup of my laptop I am getting a choice of three operating systems to boot from one window vista and two failed ubuntu operating systems, How can I remove the two failed operating systems? I am afraid to insert the disk again because this is why I have two failed ubuntu systems.

It sounds like you installed from within Windows using the windows installer (wubi). You should first go to control panel and Add/Remove - look for "Ubuntu" and select it to uninstall. This should remove one of those entries.

For the other, follow the manual uninstall instructions on the Wubi Guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#How%20do%20I%20manually%20uninstall%20Wubi%3F

From within ubuntu can you give the output of:

dpkg -l | grep linux-image-2

Thanks

I can not get into ubuntu, both installations failed and only shows up on the startup screen.

Then go into Windows, insert the Ubuntu CD and try to uninstall Ubuntu. Then you can try again to install it.

The only way to remove these will be to use Microsoft's bcdedit command line tool (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721886(WS.10).aspx) or maybe easyBCD.

You can also hide the Windows boot manager screen by setting the Timeout to zero - make sure the default is Windows (I'm sure it is, but many Ubuntu dual boot users have made this mistake). This will boot straight into Windows without prompting you anymore.

The uninstall will at most delete a single entry - and you'll find it in c:\ubuntu\uninstall-wubi.exe.

Can you help with this problem?
