which verson dektop or netbook for laptop?

I have a HP/Compaq nx6110 laptop. Tried desktop version which locked up after update. Then downloaded netbook version but having problem with both desktop and netbook veriosn as well as XP. I think I need to removal both desktop and netbook version then reinstall. suggestion and procedures would be appreciate. Any further info will be provided if needed.

not sure how to install added programs, just a beginner with Ubuntu.Any help would be appreciated.

When you reinstall there should come to an option screen to replace existing linux partition. Choose this. You'll need to fully update and then reboot. After go into Ubuntu Software Center and look for what applications you want. It's a pretty easy process.

do i have to uninstall first. I looked at my HD and found four areas that were ubuntu related. Not sure how to deal with this yet. Not sure what program to use to uninstall before I rreinstall if necessary.

You can use either, depends which you prefer. The netbook is more optimized for maximum use of vertical space. If you like the interface then use it. As long as your data backups are sufficient you can simply format, reinstall and then restore the data.

Did you updated these days ? A new kernel was delivered. At boot could you choose 3rd line in boot menu, which is previous kernel and report if you still have the problem.
What are exactly the error messages ?
