ubuntu on an amd system

Asked by Craig Jamieson

i am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 on my new media centre. I am new to linux and since it is my second pc it wouldn't matter if it takes a long time to setup. unfortunately I am not moving forwards and every set of instructions seems to involve starting from a fresh install and running xbmc.

Here is the instructions I am currently trying to use
                 http://forum.xbmc.org/archive/index.php/t-99154.html

While trying to install I am told to update to kernel 2.6.39 I get an error as teh files are no longer there.

If I continue with my current kernel i start getting error messages saying I have to be the superuser.

I have also downloaded an iso which claims to have amd support built in

          http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=752888&postcount=109

this will not write to a usb using startup disc creator. saying it is probably not an ubuntu image.

could you find where I am going wrong or preferably point me to some more reliable instructions
            amd msi e350IA-e45
            4GB DDR3

I use unetbootin to create non-ubuntu boot media. You might have an easier time if you did a standard Ubuntu install before you start tweaking the kernel/drivers.

Craig
I have loaded 10.04 and 10.10 with no problems like you have. I agree with Ubfan, standard Ubuntu install. I believe this will help. Good Luck.

sorry I rushed the question and missed out the point of these methods of installation.

to run 1080p video there has to be decription by the gpu. to do this I am told I have to install VA-API. This installation is included in the steps but I am getting problems during the kernel update and the driver installation.

Basically I need a working method to get VA-API working on an amd/ati machine

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa ; sudo apt-get update

Then use software centre to change the repo from natty to maverick (the PPA only goes up to maverick but it does work). Then ok out and close software centre and run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install xbmc

Should be ok

actually scratch that.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/unstable; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install xbmc

Does that not work?

yes that seems to work (after a full reinstall), still having some problems with full hd. I think this is because the video is being compressed as my screen now has a wide black border round it. This happens after I install amd/ati drivers.
