11.10 uninstall?

Asked by James Holmes

I started with ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), Loved it, Can almost navigate it blindfolded. Upgraded to 11.10........ Well I must quote Forrest Whittaker in Good Morning Vietnam, "It Sucks the sweat off a dead mans balls." It was a huge backward step. I want to keep my programs, but dump the 11.10 and get back to 10.10, is there a way to do taht? I could just reinstall 10.10 from my DVD Drive, but would loose my add on programs.

There's no easy way to downgrade. You could install Gnome-panels to get the classic interface back but it's not quite the same thing. There are other DEs you could try also. Really though, Unity is just different. It has some advantages, and some things that take some getting used to. It's come a long way from the initial 11.04 release.

Support for 10.10 ends in April this year, so going back to it is not a very good option really. 10.04 LTS would make more sense since it will be supported until April 2013.

With the debian package manager you can make a list of currently installed applications, and feed this list back to dpkg to reinstall the applications on a new install. eg http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-get-list-installed-software-reinstallation-restore.html

Note that this link was simply the first one that came up in a google search - you should have a look at other examples to see how others are doing it (but it should be about the same AFAIK.)

Thanks for your input. I Think I'll just re install 10.10, there was never anything wrong with it and because I come from "Old School" if it ain't broken, Don't fix it!, ways. I'll just shut off "Auto-Update" features.

Thanks again!
