12.04 LTS loading problems

Asked by Jeramy Skinner

I just want to write in that I have been experiencing major problems trying to load 12.04 LTS. I am using Dell Latitude D610 laptop. I have been running Ubuntu on it since I got a copy of 9.04. I have run really well with 10.04 and did upgrades until I got to 11.04. However I wanted to new system and a fresh install. I have tried several ways to load 12.04 LTS in. First, I downloaded from Ubuntu home and put on USB. Upon boot it gets to the Ubuntu Logo splash screen with the five dots and then freezes. It would not go to the option screen for live session or install. Next I went to my old copy of 10.04 LTS so I could do LTS upgrade. My 10.04 installed just fine. The update program did not recognize another LTS. After this I downloaded 11.10. This installed fine using USB. I did the full update and then went to distro upgrade to 12.04. Again upon restart it froze at the splash screen before login. I am now doing a clean install with 11.10 and hopefully these bugs can be worked out. My suspicion is that is the Unity, never had problems with gnome.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Does the system have a make and model?

Was at a local install fest today (nlug.org) and had same issue.

Processor on D600 latitude laptop (Pentium-m) does not support pae.

Is there a way to boot with pae disabled?

pae is needed on i386 machines that have 4G or more RAM. D600 series support a maximum of 1G RAM.

More info.
No I did not run MD5 test. Even so the same problem happened when updating from 11.10 inside Update Manager. I did try going into recovery system and going through the options with that. No luck there. The only other thing was that I briefly saw was that there was a fail on the fall back graphics and the Dell Latitude D610 has the broadcom wireless and needed the driver. The driver is proprietary. It gave the web address for it. I went to the bios and shut off the wireless with no luck. I am still learning so I don't really know much technical right now.

You definitely need to check the md5sum of the ISO you downloaded. It takes 1 minute to do, and will tell you if the file got corrupted or not:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

I can recommend you download the ISO via the torrent if you have to get it again. Canonical's servers are getting hammered and it seems to be causing a few problems.

I am having exactly the sme problem. I have a Dell Latitude 610 laptop and attempted to perform the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04. Hangs in the reboot step. Tried to load fresh from USB drive and get the same problem. I hit the F2 key to see the log that displays when booting and see it stopping on an error that makes me believe that there is a driver missing that the network configuration needs. The error is below:

[33.715382] b43-phy() ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode.fw" not found
[33.715444] b43-phy() ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode45.fw" not found
[33.715506] b43-phy() ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.

The same instance of the load build was sucessfully used to run an upgrade on a couple of other machines (not Dell 610's though) so I doubt it is the checksum for the distro.

I am a novice Ubuntu'er, but it looks to me that there is a driver for the wireless hardware on the Dell that is expected in the loader. I even disabled the wireless LAN in my BIOS thinking it may proceed by the error, but no. Now I have an upgrade that is stuck and cannot get beyond the boot up to load any further drivers as required.

Any thoughts?

I appreciate the learnings of the masters here.

@ Chip
It may seem to be the same problem, but yours is quite different. Press <ctrl><alt>F2 to get a console where you can login, and you will be able to follow the instructions at the URL you just posted. You should also get all updates available, which you can also do from the command line. If you run into further problems please start a new thread rather than hijack this one.

Try:

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter bcmwl-kernel-source

Reboot to test

Can you help with this problem?
