You can use rsync or dd to copy the data over. I'd just do a clean install on SSD then restore the user data from your backups.

Hi ,
The Operating System is not simple files you can copy and paste(throw in) to another disk and then you have the demand to work just like that - Out of the box.
There is a structure , there are millions of files .. is not simple. OK, Unix-based systems have simplest construction than Windows , but again is not so easy. You know ? Is not just a copy and paste.

For me you have 2 options to achieve what you want.

1) Do a fresh installation of Ubuntu in SSD and then copy ONLY you personal files and personal configuration files from programs you had. Of course you have to re-install all the programs from scratch , but you will have your configuration files ready.
Yes , files from your /home directory can be copied just like that. Simple , and replace the existents.

2) Use a program specialized to this work . Clone !
For instance , you can use CloneZilla => http://clonezilla.org/
This is not the easiest solution (as the first) but clonezilla is capable to clone your entire Ubuntu partition (even the whole disk) and restore it to a new disk . Read the documentation carefully and...

GOOD LUCK !
