Finding + Running Apps

Hi,
Im an XP oldtimer...Now trying to broaden my horizon as to what else is out there...I found Linux/Ubuntu and it is interesting...I know it will take time to find my way, here is my first question.

To assist I have Ubuntu fully installed I used the CD option to install. Ive seen some of the Ubuntu help docs they are well thought out, but I wonder if some newbies, can hook me up with some quick fixes....you know how in XP we found the correct app downloaded it to desktop, ran it and it installed...we could then uninstall in control panel if we did not want it...well....here in Ubuntu I find apps, click install, they do install but where?.. I loose it from here. I dont know how to navigate to the programe ...if its installed and if it is how to run it?

Eg. I will use Avast Free version desktop ...is there a Linux Ubuntu version? If not, what is the best free alternative on the same power level. Do offer a few lines on navigating to, finding , running, and viewing newly installed apps at will . I can then use your advisory for the any other apps I choose in the future.

Incidently, if there are Anti Virual programes freely available and created open sourced by the community which are on a "Power" of AVAST, AVG, KAPERSKY ect, then please do advise and I will promote that avenue.

Lastly, do all Linux Ubuntu users get the " Screen Shiver " every 10secs or so , its like a flickering line or two for a split second blinking across the active page...dont know if its default in Linux/Ubuntu or is there a fix, please advise?

Example, after downloading a multimedia application, via SoftwareCenter, Synaptic, it usually appears in applications -> sound & video

A securitiy application may be found in system administration menu.

Screen saver settings can be found in
system preferences -> screensaver

Choose a preferred layout, increase the time value to lets say 20 minutes or tick no screensaver at all, whatever you like.
At the bottom of the same window click on power management and verify the settings to be consistent with sreensaver, e.g. screen idle time after 30 minutes.

You don't really need AV in Ubuntu.

You can use avast with:

cd ~; wget http://files.avast.com/files/linux/avast4workstation_1.3.0-2_i386.deb; sudo dpkg -i ./avast4workstation_1.3.0-2_i386.deb; cd /usr/lib/avast4workstation/share/avast/desktop; sudo ./install-desktop-entries.sh install

You will need to use:
http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition

To register for your free key to be sent to your email.

Under power options you can set the scree saver timeout to be longer

I just want to say that apps are very essential however its now not your activity only however its the activity of any linux developer , however how these people may have any free time to make a good app after they make new distros each in some time.
