No "launcher icon size slider" in Appearance

Asked by Gregor Shapiro

Trying to change the size of the Launcher icons I am directed to use "the Launcer size slider" in the Appearance application. There is no such slider that I can find.
Please include information in the Help for those of us who are in my situation.

How go I change the appearance of my 12.04 desktop? I want to make my Launcher icons smaller (I have no slider in my Appearance app that is supposed to do the trick).

If you are using the ubuntu-2d environment , then the "Launcher size slider" is not supported.
This function supported only in ubuntu (unity 3d) environment .

I bet that if you give this command in terminal

~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION

the result will be

~$ ubuntu-2d

You have to choose the "Ubuntu" session from the login screen to have the ability to change the icons size in the Launcher.

Take a look at these pictures to see how you will select the Ubuntu (unity 3D) session from login screen.

You have to select: Ubuntu

Thanks

Did you upgrade directly from Maverick to Precise, or did you upgrade through all the releases in between?

If neither of above work. Try CompizConfig Settings Manager - Ubuntu Unity Plugin - Experimental - Launcher icon size (eighth line down). Set as a percent.

I think I did all the intermediate upgrades from Maverick to Precise.

So the problem here is not the menu of Appearance . Is that your graphics card (or something else) not let you to login at Ubunut=Unity3D environment.

You can close this question as solved and open a new one or we can continue here , but you have to change the title of question to something more similar to your problem.

Also give the results of these commands

~$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga

~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

Thanks

If you log in to Unity2D and set the size there, does it mirror to 3D.

Or use this:

Cannot (don't know how to) set size in 2-d. That was the whole point of
this question. Cannot log on to 3-d (I stay in 2-d even when I try the
Unity logon).
So my problem has become that my graphics card, or something else that is
broken, will not allow a Unity 3-d experience.

If you want to resize the icons in ubuntu-2d session , this is another question.

Follow the link that @actionparsnip provided . You have to manually "hack" some items.

Thanks

The 'whole point' of my answer was to give a link to how you can fix it. Did you check the link?

I have followed the link provided by actionparsnip. Thank you.
When I feel a little less "faint of heart" I will attempt to edit these
system files.

I have not edited the files but will close this thread in the belief that if I do hack the files correctly I will get the results expected.
(There should be a "This probably would have solved my problem if i dared to do it" button! ;-)

You aren't manually editting system files, the script does it for you....
