unable to load updates as log in will not remain on the screen to allow me to start updates

Unable to incorporate updates as the log in screen does not remain on the screen long enough for me to enter my log in password.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
