search box in ubuntu software center ?

Never seen this. You could try what this site says.

THERE used to be a rectangle box in software center.
I type out ehat I am looking for. This saves lot of time.

By what you said, you don't have a lot of experince. You may not know how to use the terminal. The site below tells you how.

The site is not the easiest to understand. To get Actionparsnip's command, three keys must be held down, at one time. For only a moment. The keys are Ctrl Alt T, if you are using Ubuntu. Look at site for other Ubuntu programs, like Xbuntu and Lubuntu. When you press the three keys, a window will come up. Always copy and paste the command. In this case: lsb_release -a; uname -a . If it asks for your password, type it in and press enter. It will show nothing, that is OK, when you press enter Ubuntu will take it. Copy and Paste complete results back here. If you already know about Terminal, please ignore this. I have no idea why the search box is missing.

Dear Michael,

I tried to uninstall and reinstall the software center; that did not help.
Please find the output from the terminal below. My ubuntu has been
upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 via the auto upgrade option (it is not a fresh
install).

How about if you make it not maximised then maximise it again?
