Ubuntu 14.04: Monitor resolution 640 x 480 in VirtualBox

Why does Ubuntu 14.04 not support higher monitor resolutions than 640 x 480 in a virtual machine run by VirtualBox 4.3.10?
Ubuntu 12.04 does not have this limitation!
My host system is Kubuntu and I have VirtualBox 4.3.10 on the host.
I created a new virtual machine in VirtualBox (with the monitor resolution of the host, which is 1600 x 1200).
I start the new virtual machine and install Ubuntu 14.04 in the VM.
I expect, that Ubuntu recognizes the available monitor resolution of the VM. But Ubuntu uses only 640 x 480. Furthermore this is the only resolution I can set in the system settings (Systemeinstell
