Ubuntu 14.04: Monitor resolution 640 x 480 in VirtualBox

Why does Ubuntu 14.04 not support higher monitor resolutions than 640 x 480 in a virtual machine run by VirtualBox 4.3.10?

Ubuntu 12.04 does not have this limitation!

My host system is Kubuntu and I have VirtualBox 4.3.10 on the host.
I created a new virtual machine in VirtualBox (with the monitor resolution of the host, which is 1600 x 1200).
I start the new virtual machine and install Ubuntu 14.04 in the VM.
I expect, that Ubuntu recognizes the available monitor resolution of the VM. But Ubuntu uses only 640 x 480. Furthermore this is the only resolution I can set in the system settings (Systemeinstellungen/Anzeigegeräte in german; in english something like: system settings/monitor).

Did you install the guest additions?

Installing the VBOX guest additions solved the problem (in a virtual machine with a new Ubuntu 14.04 installation).

The VBOX Guest additions are part of the host. The installation of the guest additions is quite simple. Click in the VirtualBox menu on "Medium mit Gasterweiterungen einlegen ..." (= insert the guest additions disk / media).

I didn't verify, if a re-installation of the VBOX guest addtitions solves problem after updating Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.
