Hello Kevin

From the documentation:

System Requirements

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server Edition supports three (3) major architectures: Intel x86, AMD64, and PowerPC. The table below lists recommended hardware specifications. Depending on your needs, you might manage with less than this. However, most users risk being frustrated if they ignore these suggestions.

Table 2.1. Recommended Minimum Requirements

Install Type: Server

RAM: 64 megabytes

Hard Drive Space: 500 megabytes

166 MHz processor

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.

Kevin,

According to the information Bhavani Shankar has supplied you with, your hardware exceeds the minimum requirements .

Additionally, you'll probably want the 64-bit edition.

Please report back here and indicate if this or Bhavani's response solves your question, or if you require further information.

Thanks,

Harvey

Hahaha...

You forgot to mention the feature ... "The Server Edition is optimised for i686 processors while the Desktop Edition is optimised for both the i586 and i686" (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition/features/kernel).

If someone follows the conventional wisdom of using an older PC as a home server they had better find another linux to do it with; because Ubuntu server simply will not run (as installed from the CD) on an older PC with a i586 class CPU.
