Unity on 10.10 64 bit Desktop not working

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (64 bit edition).
On previous releases I installed Netbook launcher because I appreciated the user interface very much.
Now, gnome on 10.10 works but the new Unity UI and the window manager are not working.
I used a new test account to avoid dot folder from previous releases (i.e. new .gnome, etc.) but when I start a new session:

- The screen shows only the background image and nothing else (no icons, no bars, nothing)
- When I click on the top bar on the right, the menu for change user or exit dialog appears.
- When I click on the top bar on the left the desktop shows me the central areas with big icons to launch application
- When I click on the left, the bar is not visible but I can launch applications
- The applications don't have window adornment as border, button to close the windows and so on

Has anybody experiences with Unity on 64 bit environment working?

Unity is still under developement.
It's using mutter as window manager.

Full effects requires Compiz as a window manager, which sadly isn’t compatible with the Unity interface

Thanks Sam for your answer, I was wasting time and your answer is clear and very helpful to me.
Obviously in open software project it's not a bug, it's a feature.
I used Netbook Remix user interface with gnome in 9.10 and 10.4 but now someone decided to deploy software under development to substitute software that achieved quality production level,
After ten years it's time for me to stop to play and to change operating system.
