11.04 launcher & top / bottom panel disappeared

Asked by Koen Cosyns

I upgraded to 11.04 already. Everything worked fine but after a few reboots suddenly the launcher and the top & bottom panel have disappeared. Anyone an idea how to solve this?

Tx, Cozze

This might be a bug. Ubuntu 11.04 is still in beta, and bugs are expected.

Does it happen for another user account? If you only have one user account, then press Alt+F2, type in "users-admin" (without the quotes), and press enter--then you can create another account and test it. If nothing happens when you press Alt+F2, then you can press Ctrl+Alt+F1, log in nongraphically, and add the new user account with the adduser utility. See http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/en/man8/adduser.8.html. To get back from the nongraphical virtual terminal to your graphical user interface, press Alt+F7. If that doesn't work, press Alt+F8.

By the way, if you do end up having to add the other user from the command line, you should keep two or three things in mind:

(1) When you enter passwords on the command line, no placeholder characters (like *) appear--that's OK, just type them in and press enter.

(2) The adduser utility has to be run as root, so you'll actually run it with sudo (i.e., put sudo, followed by a space, before your adduser command). See http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/en/man8/sudo.8.html for details.

(3) When you're done with your nongraphical login, you can log out by running the exit command, or the logout command. (You don't really need to know details about these, but if you're interested, the information is in http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/en/man1/bash.1.html.)

Are you still experiencing this problem?

After 11.04 was officially launched I performed a clean install, but the problem occured again. I am not really into computers , the solution you proposed was a bit too complex for me, so I downgraded to 10.10 again.

regards, Cozze

If you're happy continuing to use Ubuntu 10.10, then you can mark this question as Solved. (You can do that here at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+question/154095.)

If you upgrade to 11.04 later and you experience this exact problem again, you can always reopen the question (though if it's much later, you might want to post a new question instead).

By the way, rather than going back to Ubuntu 10.10, you could probably have selected "Ubuntu Classic" as the session type on the login screen (you can do this after specifying your username, while it's asking you for your password), which gives you the (slightly newer version of the) old interface from Ubuntu 10.10. If you want to use programs that are available only in 11.04 (or later versions available in 11.04), or to benefit from other improvements to 11.04 besides the interface, then you could upgrade to 11.04 and do that. I can't promise you there would be no problems with the "Ubuntu Classic" interface, but this problem seems specific to Unity.

Can you help with this problem?
