how can I retrive my desktop icons after upgrading

I upgraded my Ubuntu and now none of my icons are on the desktop. And I can not go to anything to get to the icons.

However all my files are still on the computer. What do I do?

Open a terminal and type:

gdmsetup

please select ubuntu classic or Ubuntu classic (no effects) and logout form your session then login again

How do I go about opening a terminal, in order to this?
