no icons on desktop

I installed compiz-config and was just looking at it without changing anything. The computer paused for about 30 seconds and then the launch bar, icons on desktop, and most of the panel along the top disappeared. I can access a terminal window and typed unity --reset, it scrolled down a lot of errors the way it said it should but then it just sat and did nothing. Whenever I tried to close the terminal window it said it was still working. Should I uninstall the compiz-config from a command-line? How is that done, or should I do something else? It seems that everything else is working and everything else is loading at start-up.

The version of Ubuntu that I am using is 11.10 and it has 3D Unity.

Try to do this:
1. Login into Ubuntu
2. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
3. Insert and run this command:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1
unity --reset

I have tried doing that several times but it didn't solve the problem. It gave me a message that this should not have happened and I should submit a bug report, which I have. I reinstalled the OS and it is good now. The reinstallation also solved a problem with my webcam mic not working also, so I could say it was a blessing in disguise. I would not recommend installing compiz-config with Ubuntu 11.10 until this problem is fixed.

This problem must have been caused by an installation burp. Reinstalled, all good now.
