I don't know how to access software stored on my computer since I installed Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by John Pym

Please help me.
I have just installed the latest version of Ubuntu 12.04.
It is very nice, but I can't find all the applications I had previously, such as games and the scanning application; to name just two.
When I go into the logithèque (software library) it says they are installed but it doesn't say how to launch them.
In the "Tableau de bord" it only shows recent programmes.
Thanks
John

Hi ,

you can access easily and quick your installed software from Dash.

Dash is the Ubuntu Icon up left. First in the right bar (Launcher).

I suggest you to read this : https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/index.html

It will help you at your first steps with this new environment.

Thanks

What did you have previously; an earlier version of Ubuntu, if so which, or a totally different OS like Windows?

Take a look here http://ubuntu-manual.org/ this explains how the Unity desktop works.

Hi Warren, thanks for the answer. I had a previous version of Ubuntu (not sure which - about two years old now). The section on software management in the manual you sent me is fine for SEARCHING and INSTALLING not-yet installed software, but nowhere does it tell me how to open software that was previously installed on my previous generation Ubuntu system - the change to 12.04 was irreversible. For example, I had SimpleScan on my previous system, but I simply cannot locate it any more, even though the software centre helpfully tells me that it is installed, along with all my favourite games, which I also cannot access any more. On the previous system I had a drop-down menu, top-left of the screen, which allowed me to access various programmes, including office software, games, graphics software (this is where I accessed SimpleScan). That has now disappeared and I can't find anything equivalent in 12.04. The "Dashboard" feature simply points at "Recent Applications" none of which are of any use to me. This is all rather annoying and I'm beginning to wish I had stayed with the previous version of Ubuntu, which was a bit clunkier but at least I could find my way around. John

OK I would not recommend going back to the old version but you can get the old desktop back, well almost.

Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter the following command

sudo apt-get install gnome panel

Enter your password when asked. Note there is no feedback but your password is being accepted just type it and press enter.

Now reboot

When you get to the login screen next to your name and above the box where you enter your password there is a circular icon click on it and select "Gnome Classic" then enter your password.

Both desktops are installed so if you want to go back to the new one just select "Unity" or "Unity (2D)" from the same icon any time you boot.

Your selection is remembered so you don't have to click on the icon every time, just is you want a change,

Hi Warren,

Many thanks for all the tips.

back home now, so I tried out your recipe.

Unfortunately, it didn't work- see screenshot enclosed.

Perhaps it would be easier if you just explain how I access software installed on my machine using the new system.

Another bug - every other time I re-boot my keyboard doesn't get recognised.

Sorry about all this.

John

Assuming you have flash installed have a look here

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1381B5E5A886C76C

If the videos don't play then open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) Enter the following command

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Reboot, or just log out and back in again and they will.

Its much easier to be shown than to explain.

You can't attach anything in this forum. So I didn't see your screenshot.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask John Pym for more information if necessary.
