Slightly Weird (?) Behaviour of Unity When Selecting and Dragging with Mouse

Asked by Navneeth Chandrasekaran

Hi. First-time Unity user here (12.04), so please excuse me if this topic has been covered before.

While in Firefox I select something at random with the mouse -- let's say text on a website -- and drag it, the Unity bar appears on the side (I have it hidden) and among all the icons only the Home folder and trash are highlighted. Why does this happen? I can't obviously drag the text and drop it in the folder.

UPDATE: it happens even when I select and drag stuff from a PDF document.

I suggest you report a bug. Does it happen with other browsers?

Looks like the folder icon is highlighted, try dragging over that, see what happens. It may allow you to make a new file of the text

As I said in my first post, I can't do that. Nothing happens. I've checked within the folder as well, even among hidden files, just to make sure.

Can anyone replicate this in their machines? I'll file it as a bug if no one can come up with a satisfactory explanation of why this happens.

what happens if you drop the text on the folder? I can't replicate it as I use openbox with a highly customized UI:

Nothing. Or, to put it in another way, the same thing that would happen if you drop it anywhere where you're not supposed to (in another non-text-field area of the website, for example). As soon as I release the mouse button, the text is "dragged back" to its original location.

Oh, BTW, while still in drag mode, when I move the cursor over the application icons, regardless of whether they're highlighted or not, the arrow with the application name appears.

All I can suggest is report a bug
