Which desktop do you use?
Which release did you have before you upgraded?

I am new to Ubuntu and know very little it. I’m not sure what you mean
by which desktop fo i use. I upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10. All was good
in 12.04 but at after to upgrade things got strange. Settings, clock and
battery time are all gone and I have no idea what to do. Any help you
can give would be appreciated.

Your question #213509 on compizconfig-settings-manager in Ubuntu changed:

Do you have a bar on the left with icons and a bar at the top?

I have a bar on the left and on at the top. The one on the left no
longer shows settings and the bar at the top no longer shows the time,
time left on battery. Also dropdown settings at top right no longer
brings up settings.

"sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-deskto" did the trick! settings, audio, clock and battery icons all return.
