Do you mean the Unity bar on the left? Saying 'side menu bar' doesn't tell us much.....

Co menu in top right -> system settings
Appearance -> behaviour tab

How is this in ANY way related to Firefox??

For Unity - Launcher bar , you have to enable the autohide mode.

Click on Dash (Ubuntu Icon first in launcher) and write : appearance

Click to open and goto "Behavior" and set the "auto-hide the launcher" option to (ON)
