Package Manager

Asked by sarawakguy

Desktop panel has "red warning icon" and the following message appears when mouse is placed on it :-

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Type 'sudo' is not known on line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'

I was trying to install a software and was not successful, then the above message appears....

What should I do and how do I get it fix?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in update-manager.
(With many applications, you can report a future bug directly on the appropriate package by opening the application's "Help" menu and choosing "Report a Problem". https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs)

Before we continue, we need a little more information to be able to fix this bug. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Reproducible and specific steps?

Maybe, I was following the instructions from https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/InstallingSoftware and after that the red dot appears. Update manager and Ubuntu Software Center fails to work.

What looks like has happened is that your /etc/apt/sources.list has an error in it. Specifically, on line 54 of that file, the word "sudo" appears where it shouldn't. To remove that "sudo" from your /etc/apt/sources.list, first type "gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" (without the quotation marks) into the terminal. Then scroll down to line 54, where the sudo is, and remove it. That line should like somewhat like this: deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid universe .

Since this does not appear to be a bug report, we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .
