New Ubuntu 10.04 installation, on initial upgrades update manager error

When I try to run the update manager, I get the following error:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.11.1-0ubuntu7.2_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault)

I also am told I have to broken packages, which I fix, but when I try to run upgrade manager they appear again.
