Update Manager gave error message after running straight after clean install of 9.10

Asked by markling

Binary package hint: update-manager

1. Update manager error message. Appeared after clean install of 9.10 while the Update Manager was reading packages:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

2. Pressed <OK>.

Update manager continued as normal.

Selected 312 Updates.

3. Restarted machine on prompt after update completed.

4. Ran Update Manager again.

5. The following error appeared after putting in password on prompt by the Update Manager:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I am going to continue with the Update Manager process but fear there may be something seriously wrong with my installation.

I have done this installation many times before on this very machine and I cannot recall this error happening before.

Ran Update Manager again immediately following restart describde above. 246 packages selected. Pressed <Install Updates>

This error appeared:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

<Close>ed error. Tried to continue with installation of Updates. Same error occured again. Cannot continue.

Note: This is a brand new install of 9.10 from USB. Install procedure wiped hard drive. Did the following things after first boot:

1. Entered HD encryption password.
2. Connected to Wifi.
3. Ran Update manager.

I'm converting this to a question because this does not seem to be a bug.

Open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" without the quotes. You will need to enter your password when prompted.

OK. It was an error message. The message specifically asked to be reported.
Thine was done.

FYI, I have just this moment emerged from another clean install of 9.10.
Same computer, same USB, same routine. This time, update worked without any
trouble.

The only difference was that I reset my IP address between the install that
created the error and this one. Did nothing else in between.

cheers

m.

Try:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a

Make sure you do NOT have software centre open and updates are not currently running etc.

Interestingly, I've now done another clean install for reasons not necessary to explain here.

I ran the Update Manager. All 312 suggested updates were installed without a hitch. I ran the Update Manager again to check there wasn't anything else and got the following error:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Note: This was another clean install. Shouldn't this really be down as an error and not a question?
