Problem to upgrade Ubuntu 6.06 to 10.10

Can I strip off Ubuntu 6.06, or format the Hard drive and install Ubuntu 10.10 from a CD which I can down load?

1: Download the ISO file.
2_Burn a CD
3: Install the CD

the cd will not erase the computer. but installation will. so back up the files you want before you install. or make a separate partition on the drive then move all the files here. alternatively, you can move the /home directory to its own partition, so it doesn't get erased.
