can i upgrade 10.04 using the 11.10 cd

Asked by william zuk

if i choose the update option when installing 11.10 over 10.04, will i loose the gnome dial-up tool ?

the dial-up is my only internet connection, so this is an issue for me. i know during installation it recommends having a connection, but if i boot from the cd i can't make the connection.

i tried installing cd while running 10.04, but computer did not recognise cd.

don't worry.....upgrading won't delete any of the installed software. the software will run as it used to do in 10.04. you can't use that tool while running 11.10 CD in live mode because the tool was actually installed on Hard Disk. Just upgrade to 11.10 and then install all the updates later. have a great time with ubuntu!!!!!

To upgrade from cd please use the Ubuntu 10.10 alternate iso image

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaverickUpgrades

please tell why do you want to upgrade your LTS Long Term Support release... ?
you can upgrade from 10.04 LTS directly to the next 12.04 LTS

Upgrading from 10.04 directly to 11.10 is not supported and strongly not suggested... better to install Ubuntu 11.10 from scratch...

first you need to upgrade to 11.10 and to 11.04 before upgrading to 11.10.
for that check your update manager settings. make sure that the option to
prompt availability of new distributions is selected or not.

I changed settings in software sources and am now offered to upgrade
10.04 to 10.10 in update manager. using a dial-up connection it will
take 24 hrs., but I am still hesitant, fearing loss of installed
dial-up tool.

you won't loose any settings or installed software. just go ahead with the
upgrade and enjoy the Oneiric.
