recommended method of upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 leaving data and added apps intact

Asked by j oliff

no problem yet, because i haven't done anything yet. would like to upgrade my Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04 (i have the cd).
looking for best method to do upgrade without having to reinstall extra applications that i have on the system and leave documents intact (not really worried about docs as i have backups, but i hate to reinstall all the extra applications).

yes, i am a linux ubuntu newbie. only been running 8.10 a few days, and i just received the 9.04 cd in the mail from Canonical in the Netherlands. why upgrade? because its there. because i can. my thanks in advanced to the community!

BTW: some background info. 8.10 was installed from LiveCD and then completely ugraded over the net. the new 9.04 CD is labeled "desktop edition"

regards,

sudo update-manager -d

will upgrade you online, The CD you have is the desktop cd. You can only perform an upgrade with the ALTERNATE CD and *NOT* the desktop one. The desktop CD is for new installs ONLY.

The docs you have will not be touched as the upgrade only upgrades the programs you have. Some hardware may not work if you had to compile drivers for it as the new kernel will need a new driver for the same hardware compiling. The old kernels will still be on your system until you remove them so you will be able to boot to the old release if you wish but the apps you have upgraded may misbehave with the older kernel.

You have 2 options:
1) Clean install of Jaunty using the CD you recieved then reinstate docs and apps and settings
2) Web upgrade and deal with problems (if there are any) in the new setup.

Linux comes with zero warranty, zero SLA and zero garuntees

Make your move. Standing still is a move =D

Back up your files and do the online-upgrade. It should work.

Check System-Administration-update manager. You will be prompted to enter your password. The update manager should display the possibility to upgrade to 9.04.

If the upgrade should have any problems, you can still do a clean install using the CD.

thanks so much everyone. really glad i asked. i'll just upgrade over net and tuck this cd away for recovering a completely dead installation some day. evidently 8.10 loved my hardware and i'll bet 9.04 will too. thanks again for the tips and info!!
consider me solved.

I would guess that it's possible to get a list of all the packages you curretnly have got installed but i can't remember how i did this or whether it would include packages installed beyond those included on the cd. Also i'm not sure if it would be much help afterwards lol

Err, ignore this post, it's not helpful lol
Nicely done btw :)
